Projects
Decades of war and civil unrest have brought widespread poverty to Cambodia, which now ranks among the poorest nations in the world. Average family income is around $300 / year. This poverty has produced large numbers of orphaned and seriously vulnerable children. Infant mortality is among the highest in the world, with an almost 6% chance of dying in the first year of life. Forty thousand children under five years die annually of easily preventable or treatable diseases, such as tetanus or diarrhea/dehydration. It is estimated that fully 40% of all children are malnourished, 17% of them severely so. These are the children that TSF is committed to help, and for whom we are seeking support. The Sharing Foundation is making a difference in the lives of Cambodian children in ways that we never would have dreamed possible. The Foundation's growth, and our impact, has been astonishing since our beginning in 1998, and we''ve seen our success clearly in the faces of the many children whose lives we are helping improve. Our
current work now primarily focuses in the village of Roteang, a small farming,
fishing and subsistence-living hamlet about a half an hour outside Phnom Penh.
The village is home to The Sharing Foundation's Roteang
Orphanage, our model home for up to 60 children that has been open and
running smoothly since December, 2001. Our success with the Roteang Orphanage
has allowed us to widen our efforts to help some of the region's poorest families,
offering them and especially their children a chance for a brighter future. Through the various projects that the Sharing Foundation is undertaking in Roteang Village and beyond, life is improving for the children whose lives we're able to touch. |
